Pedestrian killed when truck hauling gravel overturns on Highway 70 on-ramp

A man standing on the shoulder of a Highway 70 on-ramp in Yuba County died Monday afternoon when a semitruck pulling a trailer loaded with gravel overturned, spilling its load.

The incident occurred about 1:15 p.m. as a 2016 Western Star semitruck driven by Christine N. Straub, 54, of Grass Valley, made a left turn from Erle Road westbound to the Erle Road on-ramp to southbound Highway 70 in the Olivehurst area, according to a California Highway Patrol news release. A 46-year-old man from Fairfield was standing on the right shoulder of the Erle Road on-ramp to the highway, next to his Dodge Ram pickup truck.

The semitruck and trailer overturned onto their right side and struck the man. Gravel spilled out of the trailer, striking the Dodge Ram. A 17-year-old boy in the passenger seat of the pickup was not injured, the news release said.

The man who was struck died at the scene. His name has not been released pending notification of family. The driver of the semitruck was transported to Rideout Memorial Hospital in Marysville with moderate injuries, the news release said.

A CHP investigation is underway to determine what caused the semitruck to overturn.

Anyone who witnessed the crash is asked to call the CHP Yuba-Sutter Area office at 530-674-5141.
