Citrus Heights police are mourning the death of Bruno, a member of the department’s K-9 unit who died Tuesday night.

“Bruno kept many of our officers safe during the years, aided in numerous arrests throughout the region, and provided outstanding service to our community,” Chief Ron Lawrence wrote in a Citrus Heights Police Department social media post.

Bruno was born on Oct. 5, 2007, and worked alongside Officer Sal Lombardo. When Lombardo became a sergeant with the West Sacramento Police Department, Bruno retired from duty and became a family pet alongside the Lombardos cat, according to a Facebook post by the Foothills K9 Association.

“We loved him. We miss him already. We will remember him,“ the Foothills post read. “Rest easy, big guy. You've earned it.”
