A Sacramento Superior Court judge sentenced Ricky Freeny to 82 years to life in prison Friday for shooting his ex-girlfriend and killing her male passenger in 2015.

Freeny, 33, chased down Nicole Burch and Gregory Denzel King in his car after seeing them driving together sometime after midnight on June 12, 2015. He shot Burch in the forearm, leaving her unable to drive, then walked out of his car and shot King nine times, according to a Sacramento County District Attorney's Office media release.

Police arrested Freeny in Vallejo later that day after Burch and King were found inside the car around 3:35 a.m. near the intersection of Broadway and Riverside Boulevard. Burch survived the shooting, while King, 21, was pronounced dead at the scene.

He was convicted of first-degree murder and discharging a firearm into an occupied vehicle on Feb. 9, 2018, and pleaded guilty to possession of a controlled substance the same day. He previously pleaded no contest to vandalism in 2004 and resisting arrest in 2006.
