Rancho grass fire may be linked to homeless encampment

People in a homeless encampment may have sparked a small grass fire in Rancho Cordova Sunday afternoon, according to officials.

Firefighters responded to a call reporting the grass fire behind a Home Depot on Sunrise Boulevard at 2 p.m., said Capt. Chris Vestal, Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District spokesman. The fire started behind a cyclone fence in the empty field, and firefighters were able to climb through an existing hole in the fence to control the fire.

In 20 minutes, the fire was extinguished, he said. The cause of fire is unknown but the homeless encampment in the same field behind the store will factor into the investigation.

The fire burned less than an acre and no structures were threatened, Vestal said.
