Alleged Roseville shooter facing life, makes brief court appearance

Seven counts of attempted murder of a law enforcement officer top a lengthy list of charges filed Tuesday against Samuel Nathan Duran, the suspect in last week’s lengthy shootout and standoff with law enforcement in Roseville.

Duran is facing life in prison if convicted, the Placer County District Attorney’s Office said Tuesday. He has previously been convicted of assault with a deadly weapon and attempted carjacking, both “strikes” under California’s “10-20-life” law.

Dressed in orange, Duran made a brief appearance Tuesday afternoon in Placer Superior Court, during which he was assigned a public defender. While most defendants are brought into court in groups of a dozen or more, Duran was marched into the courtroom alone. His face showed days-old cuts and bruises. Two deputies stood behind Duran, two more between him and Superior Court Judge Colleen Nichols and two more at the door.

Duran was set to enter a plea at 1:30 p.m., but the proceeding was delayed until Friday at the request of his newly assigned attorney. Duran is being housed in the Placer County jail and is ineligible for bail.

Before the uneventful court appearance, Duran’s family filled the small waiting room outside the jailhouse courtroom in Auburn. Four generations were present, including his 91-year-old grandmother and a boy as young as 3. They declined to speak to the media. One friend of the family challenged the presence of the media, which outnumbered all other spectators not related to the family.

Duran allegedly wounded six law enforcement officers before being taken into custody early Saturday.

Duran, 32, of Roseville was charged in a complaint with seven counts of attempted murder of a peace officer, seven counts of assault with a semi-automatic firearm on a peace officer, residential burglary, two counts of false imprisonment, two counts of making criminal threats, possession of a stolen firearm, and possession of a firearm by a felon.

Duran allegedly shot two law enforcement officers and injured four others in a shootout and standoff in Roseville before being taken into custody early Saturday.

Since 2002, Duran has violated his parole at least eight times. His record includes possession of a controlled substance, corporal injury upon a spouse and resisting an officer.

On May 27, 2009, Duran – a documented gang member – was sentenced to seven years, two months for attempted carjacking and assault with a deadly weapon. He served three years before being released on parole in November 2012.

On July 19, 2013, following several failed attempts to contact Duran, his parole agent officially reported him missing and asked the court to issue an arrest warrant.
