A newborn suffering from hypothermia found this week in a flowerbed in Galt is recovering in the hospital.
The baby’s mother, Dwanda Mahoney, 30, who initially denied giving birth to the little girl, was arrested on suspicion of child endangerment.
Police said that about 5:30 a.m. Tuesday a call came into dispatchers that a baby was found crying in a flower bed in front of a home in the 500 block of B Street in Galt. Emergency medical personnel responded first to the scene and began treating the baby before taking her to the hospital.
When police arrived, Mahoney was on the front porch of the home where the baby was found. Police said Mahoney, described by police as a transient, at first denied having been pregnant or giving birth to the infant.

Mahoney was transferred to a hospital for treatment.
Police said the infant would not have survived the cold morning if the 911 call had not summoned medical personnel. Police said the child, identified only as Jane Doe, is in fair condition, police said.
