Rancho Cordova man injured in crash with Fed Ex truck

A Rancho Cordova man was seriously injured this afternoon when the car in which he was a passenger became lodged underneath a Fed Ex truck.

The crash occurred about 1:05 p.m. as a 23-year-old man from Citrus Heights was driving a 2008 International Fed Ex truck southbound on Watt Avenue, approaching Chenu Avenue. The truck was in the right-turn lane, with its turn signal activated, and slowing for a red light, according to a California Highway Patrol news release.

David Longenecker, 25, was driving a 2011 Dodge Avenger southbound on Watt Avenue approaching Chenu Avenue at a high rate of speed, straddling the No. 3 lane and the right turn lane, CHP officials said. Longenecker failed to see the Fed Ex truck slowing and slammed into the rear of the truck. The impact caused the Avenger to travel underneath the Fed Ex truck, where it became lodged.

The front passenger, Joshua Stephens, 21, of Rancho Cordva had to be extricated by Sacramento Metropolitan Fire Department personnel. He was transported to Mercy San Juan Medical Center with major injuries, according to the CHP. Neither Longenecker nor the Fed Ex driver was injured in the collision.

CHP officials said it does not appear that alcohol or drugs were factors in the collision. The crash is under investigation.
