A male driver was hurt early Monday morning when his car went airborne off the Norwood Avenue offramp from I-80 in North Sacramento and landed near a drainage canal.
The man, who was not identified, suffered major injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital, according to Michele Gigante, spokeswoman for Sacramento police. She said “alcohol looks to be a factor in the accident,” and authorities are investigating potential driving while intoxicated charges.
The incident started at 2:27 a.m., when police officers were attempting to catch up to a reckless driver in a white Acura sedan going east on Interstate 80, near Northgate Boulevard.
“The white Acura took the Northwood (Avenue) exit at a high rate of speed,” said Gigante. “It launched the vehicle over a fence and onto the other side of the drainage canal.”
