A 19-year-old man and a male juvenile have been arrested in connection with a Monday carjacking in Auburn, in which a woman was beaten with a bat.
Police responded to a 7-Eleven store on Mikkelsen Drive on Monday regarding a carjacking that had just occurred. A woman was on her way home from church and had pulled into a parking lot on Auburn Ravine Road and Palm Avenue, when two males approached her and struck her several times with a small bat, according to a Police Department news release. The two then drove off in the woman’s vehicle.
A short time later, the Auburn Police Department dispatchers broadcast the vehicle information and Placer County sheriff’s deputies found the vehicle in Newcastle. The deputies stopped the vehicle on Hoyer Road and detained the occupants. They were identified as Juan Antonio Zuniga (pictured) of Auburn, and the juvenile, whose name was not released because of his age.
Police said evidence at the scene provided probable cause to arrest the two. Zuniga was booked into Placer County Jail on suspicion of carjacking, assault with a deadly weapon and conspiracy to commit a crime. He is being held in lieu of $100,000 bail. His companion was booked into Placer County Juvenile Hall.
