One dog perished, but another was rescued from a duplex fire at McClellan Park on Tuesday afternoon.
Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District crews responded about 3 p.m. to a report of flames visible at a duplex in the 5600 block of Luce Avenue. They arrived to find one unit filled with thick, black smoke and the back bedroom well involved in fire, according to a district news release.
Bystanders told firefighters that the residents had two dogs, so while fighting the fire, crews also searched for the pets.
As the fire was contained, firefighters found one dog under the kitchen table suffering significant respiratory distress, fire officials said. The dog was taken outside, where firefighters used a special Pet Mask to administer oxygen to the animal. The dog was taken to a local veterinary hospital. As crews were mopping up, the dog returned home and is expected to make a full recovery.
