Driver identified in fatal crash with fallen tree

The Sacramento County Coroner’s office has identified Travis Chapman, 25, of Elverta, as the driver who was killed Saturday when his car ran into a fallen tree in Citrus Heights.

The accident occurred around noon Saturday, when Citrus Heights police and Sacramento Fire responded to a multicar accident at Sunrise Boulevard, near Highland Avenue. Chapman was pronounced dead at the scene, while two others, including a passenger in Chapman’s sedan, were taken to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The preliminary investigation showed that three vehicles apparently collided with a large tree as it fell onto the roadway. Chapman’s car and a mini-van were going north on Sunrise Boulevard, while another minivan was heading south before the incident.

The tree was one of many growing in the extra wide median. When the tree fell, it split down the middle, scattering debris into the north and southbound lanes, according to Bryan Fritsch, a Citrus Heights police spokesperson.

At the time, the weather was wet and rainy. One of the vehicles - the northbound mini-van - also hit a utility pole after crashing into the tree. The second collision caused the mini-van to roll, injuring the driver. No one in the southbound mini-van was hurt.

Everyone in the three vehicles wore seatbelts, according to Fritsch.

The adjacent trees in the median were checked before the roadway was reopened around 8 p.m. Saturday.
