Sheriff’s officials said they are trying to determine what prompted a man to hole up inside a Shell gas station market Wednesday night, leading to a standoff with law enforcement officers.
Sheriff’s spokeswoman Sgt. Lisa Bowman said the man was apparently fleeing from the California Highway Patrol and ran into the Shell station at Watt Avenue and Antelope Road. He shut the doors, including the security gate, but did not lock them.
At least two employees went into a back room, but officers could not confirm that the man knew they were there, so Bowman said the incident was not considered a hostage situation.
Officers did not see any weapons on the man as he walked around inside the store, but he was reported to have consumed at least two beers while inside, Bowman said.

Officers finally went inside and took the man into custody, with no injuries reported to officers or gas station employees. The man, whose name has not been released, was transported to a hospital for medical clearance before being taken to jail.
Bowman said officers did not know why the man was running from the CHP.
