A wrangler roped a cow near Highway 99 and Elk Grove Boulevard early Wednesday after the animal spent about four hours traipsing through a portion of Elk Grove.
The large cow variously roamed a shopping center, ran near the highway and generally escaped the best efforts of those who were trying to get it into a livestock trailer.

The initial call to Elk Grove police of cow-on-the-loose came in at 3:58 a.m. Wednesday near Elk Grove and East Stockton boulevards. A livestock specialist arrived on the scene.
However, despite best efforts, the cow ran around at will while officers and others in trucks, squad cars and an all-terrain vehicle tried to keep her from entering traffic.
At 7:15 a.m., the cow was standing in a field near some mobile homes. A wrangler on horseback roped the cow and she was loaded into a waiting trailer at about 7:40 a.m. for transport home.
