Roseville police arrest man in stabbing death of father

A Roseville man, shot by police after he allegedly inflicted what would turn out to be fatal stab wounds on his father, has been arrested on suspicion of homicide.

Patrick Allen Burke, 55, was arrested in the killing of his father, 85-year-old Lonnie Burke, who died Wednesday at Sutter Roseville Medical Center. The younger Burke was also arrested on suspicion of attempted murder of a police officer.

Police said that they were called to the Burke home in the 1100 block of Windermere Avenue at about 6:20 a.m. Tuesday for a report of a man who had stabbed his elderly father.

When the first officer arrived, he found Patrick Burke outside the home, armed with a knife. Burke attempted to attack the officer, police said in a news release.

The officer, fearing for his safety, shot Burke. More officers arrived and found the elder Burke inside the home with stab wounds.

Both men were taken to the hospital, where Patrick Burke is under police guard. He is in serious condition but is expected to survive.

So far, police do not have evidence of an argument between the two men that might have occurred before the attack on the elder Burke. His killing and the officer-involved shooting are being investigated by a special Roseville police unit.

The investigation is being monitored by the Placer County District Attorney’s Office. The officer who fired his weapon has been placed on paid administrative leave.
