The driver of a pickup truck died Monday evening when his vehicle ran off a roadway in south El Dorado County and struck a tree.
The crash occurred about 7:40 p.m. Sgt. John Mueller of the California Highway Patrol said a man believed to be in his 20s or early 30s was driving a 1978 Dodge pickup southbound on Mount Aukum Road when it drifted onto the right shoulder. The driver overcorrected and the truck crossed over the northbound lanes, then struck a large tree.
Mueller said the crash occurred almost in front a Pioneer Fire District station and was witnessed by a firefighter.
Although the driver, who was alone in the vehicle, was wearing a seat belt, Mueller noted that the 1978 pickup had only a lap belt, not a shoulder restraint.
