Butte County sheriff’s officials have identified the man whose body was found in a burned vehicle near Mountain House last week as 25-year-old Marc Anthony Cyril Thompson, a resident of the Chico-Oroville area.

The death is considered suspicious and investigators are treating the case as a homicide, according to a Sheriff’s Office news release. Determination of the man’s identity was based on preliminary findings. Sheriff’s officials said DNA has been submitted for analysis, but it could take several weeks to receive confirmation.

The Sheriff’s Office received a report at 7:12 p.m. Sept. 3 of a car on fire on Oroville-Quincy Highway, two miles east of Mountain House. The call was transferred to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, and when firefighters arrived, they found the body inside the burned vehicle.

The vehicle has been identified as a late 1990s model Ford Taurus sedan, tan or gold in color.
