Firefighters benefited from foothills rain Saturday as they continued to make progress against the King fire in El Dorado and Placer counties.
Containment of the fire near Pollock Pines reached 84 percent Saturday evening, up from 74 percent the night before, according to the U.S. Forest Service. In another sign of the progress made, 5,863 firefighters and support staff are battling the blaze – 1,351 fewer than on Friday.
Officials on Saturday afternoon lifted evacuation orders for Quintette and Volcanoville.
The fire has burned more than 97,000 acres since Sept. 13 and destroyed 80 structures, including 12 homes. Authorities believe the fire was started by arson and arrested Wayne Allen Huntsman, a 37-year-old area resident, earlier this month.
