A driver has been arrested on suspicion of DUI after her van collided with a bicyclist in South Lake Tahoe.
Carmel Jennings, 57, of South Lake Tahoe, was booked into El Dorado County Jail on Monday on a charge of misdemeanor DUI. If Jennings is found to be the person mostly at fault, the charge may be upgraded to felony DUI, according to South Lake Tahoe police.
Police said officers were called to the area commonly known as “the Y” at Emerald Bay Road and Lake Tahoe Boulevard about 5:40 p.m. Monday. There they found Robert Klein, 61, of South Lake Tahoe, down on the road near his bike.
He had suffered significant head injury and was flown to a Reno hospital for treatment. Klein had not been wearing a helmet when hit by the van driven by Jennings as he tried to cross Emerald Bay Road, according to a police press release.
