Butte County sheriff’s officials are investigating the death of a man whose body was found Saturday afternoon on train tracks in Gridley.
Sheriff’s dispatchers received a call at 3:50 p.m. from the California Highway Patrol about a person “possibly being run over by a train or falling from a train in the area west of Highway 99 south of Turner Avenue in Gridley,” the sheriff’s office said in a news release.
Medical teams arrived at the scene first and determined the man was dead, the sheriff’s office said.
Deputies who subsequently arrived confirmed the victim was killed after being struck by a train.

“Based on the current investigation, it is believed the decedent was accidentally hit by the train,” the sheriff’s office said. “At this time, there is nothing suspicious or any criminal intent to the incident.”
The identity of the victim was being withheld until relatives could be notified.
