An inmate just hours away from release from jail has died of an apparent suicide, Sacramento County sheriff’s officials say.
The Sacramento County Coroner’s Office identified the man as Joshua Eli Gonder, 33, of Oxnard.
The Sacramento Police Department booked him into the Sacramento County Main Jail about 10:30 a.m. Saturday on suspicion of public intoxication. Shortly after 7 p.m., sheriff’s deputies working at the jail saw him lying unconscious and unresponsive, with his torn T-shirt around his neck, according to a Sheriff’s Department news release.
Deputies rendered emergency medical aid until medical personnel arrived. Gonder was taken to a nearby hospital where he was admitted for treatment and released from jail custody.
