Second person arraigned in Davis Picnic Day shooting — is there another suspect?

The second suspect in the Picnic Day shooting in Davis that left two teens and a man wounded and sent scores scrambling from gunfire was arraigned Tuesday in Yolo Superior Court eight months after the chaos.

Stephon Wayne Stroman, 19, of Sacramento appeared for the brief afternoon proceedings, pleading not guilty to a single count of possessing a loaded firearm while not the registered owner in the April 12 shooting in Davis’ Community Park. It was Stroman’s first appearance since his surrender and arrest Friday at Yolo County Jail on the charge.

He remains free on bail ahead of a Jan. 27 preliminary hearing.

Authorities in May arrested 19-year-old Joseph Allen Davis, also of Sacramento, in connection with the shooting. Davis pleaded guilty earlier in December to federal charges of being a felon in possession of a firearm, but still faces state charges in Yolo County including possession of an assault weapon and a large-capacity magazine. He remains in Sacramento County Main Jail on a federal hold while the state’s case against him proceeds in Yolo County.

Stroman, standing with defense counsel Ava Landers, agreed to the January court date and to a judge’s order that he remain searchable for dangerous weapons while free on bail.

Yolo County deputy prosecutor Diane Ortiz suggested more developments in the spring shooting case, saying at the Tuesday hearing that another co-defendant has “yet to be arraigned.” Ortiz did not elaborate.

Shots rang out about 3 p.m. during what was an off-campus gathering that drew hundreds to the city’s Community Park. The gathering was part of city festivities surrounding Picnic Day, the annual open house event for UC Davis students, families, university faculty and alumni.

The gunfire sent panicked revelers fleeing and parents scrambling to shield little leaguers playing at a baseball diamond across the street from the park.

The investigation that followed brought together numerous law enforcement agencies producing the arrests of Davis, and now, Stroman.
