Two women who died Thursday in a collision between a bicycle and a sport-utility vehicle on Howe Avenue have been identified by the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office as Elizabeth Cavazos, 53, of Woodland, the bicyclist, and Renee Pojol, 24, of Sacramento, who was a passenger in the SUV.
A man driving the SUV also died following the crash, which occurred shortly before 2:30 p.m. north of Burney Way in the Arden Arcade area, but his name has not been released.
According to the California Highway Patrol, Cavazos was southbound on Howe Avenue, riding a bicycle in the wrong direction in the northbound bicycle lane, when a 2008 Chevy Tahoe drifted to the left across traffic lanes and struck the bicycle.
Cavazos, who was not wearing a helmet, was knocked off the bicycle and thrown more than 100 feet. CHP spokesman Officer Chad Hertzell said the SUV ran over the bicycle, but not the cyclist, then continued to the left, hitting a tree in Bellview Park. Pojol, who was not wearing a seat belt, struck her head on the windshield, then was thrown into the back of the SUV, he said.
