A preliminary investigaton indicates that too much speed may have contributed to a fatal crash Tuesday morning in Fair Oaks.

The driver of a pickup truck died when the vehicle went off the road and down an embankment in a wooded area off Sunset Avenue east of Sunset Place Lane.

A citizen reported the crash at about 2:30 a.m. Tuesday. The driver entered a left curve on eastbound Sunset Avenue and allowed his pickup to leave the south roadway edge, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The pickup hit a tree and caught fire, becoming engulfed in flames. The driver, who remained in the vehicle, died at the scene.

The driver is not yet identifiable, according to the CHP. Excessive speed appears to be a contributing factor in the crash, according to a CHP press release.
