Man sentenced to 27 years for killing 79-year-old Fair Oaks woman

Sacramento Superior Court Judge Helena R. Gweon today sentenced Moses Stanley Trotter to 27 years in prison for the July 15, 2012, beating death of Carole Jane Sturgis, 79, in her Fair Oaks home.

Prosecutors and Trotter’s defense attorney, Kelly Babineau, arranged for the defendant to plead no contest last month to voluntary manslaughter charges. Lawyers on both sides said Trotter, 34, had a mental health issue that contributed to the killing.

Under the terms of the deal, Trotter was sentenced to 11 years on the voluntary manslaughter. The term was doubled under the state’s three-strikes law as a result of Trotter’s previous conviction for a serious or violent felony. Trotter also had another five-year sentencing enhancement tacked on.
