Sacramento firefighters Wednesday morning tended to a hazardous material spill inside a business in Natomas.

The spill at the Aramark Uniform, 1419 National Drive, was reported about 7 a.m., according to a fire department spokesman.

Sacramento firefighter-paramedic Chris Harvey said that about 1,000 gallons of the chemical sodium hydroxide spilled into a containment tank built into the factory. However, 100 to 200 gallons of the chemical also spilled out of the tank onto the floor.

Firefighters in hazardous material suits with breathing apparatus were to contain the spill. Employees were evacuated out of the building.

The Centers for Disease Control website identifies sodium hydroxide an odorless solid in the form of flakes, beads or granular form.
