An inmate died Thursday morning after having medical issues at the Sacramento County branch jail in Elk Grove, according to authorities.
The 44-year-old inmate, who has not been identified, had been in custody since Oct.1 on a drug-related charge. He was being housed in barracks at the Rio Cosumnes Correctional Center, which is the custody facility for those sentenced to county jail from Sacramento County courts.
At about 7:45 a.m. Thursday, deputies were told by other inmates that the prisoner was “having medical problems,” according to a Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department press release. Deputies and medical personnel attempted to save him, but the prisoner was later pronounced dead at a hospital.
An investigation will be conducted. The inmate had no signs of trauma on his body and foul play is not suspected, authorities said.
