Sacramento Fire Department crews returned to the site of the Crystal Ice warehouse that was gutted by fire early Saturday after the fire rekindled Wednesday afternoon.

Fire Department spokesman Roberto Padilla said crews responded shortly before 2 p.m. to the building at 16th and R streets. A small fire rekindled within the collapsed roof, he said. As of 2:30 p.m., crews were clearing the scene, he said.

Padilla said it is not unusual for such fires to rekindle. Because the structure is unstable, he said, crews have not been able to go inside. But he said firefighters monitored the site through Tuesday and investigators have been on the scene daily.

An enormous fire early Saturday gutted a vacant warehouse at the corner of 16th and R streets in midtown Sacramento, badly damaging one of the buildings slated to be redeveloped into a two-block mix of housing, offices and restaurants.
