A man is dead after his car veered out of control in north Sacramento and caught fire, authorities said.
The Sacramento Fire Department received reports about 11:30 a.m. Sunday that a vehicle was burning in a ditch off Rio Linda Boulevard, just 50 feet south of the city limit. Witnesses told firefighters they saw a Lexus traveling north on Rio Linda before suddenly losing control, going through several trees and falling into the ditch, according to Chris Harvey, Fire Department spokesman.
“They were traveling so fast that the trees broke off,” Harvey said. “Our crew members pulled the two victims out of the burning car before there was a hose line, which is pretty incredible.”
The two male victims suffered severe burn injuries and were transported to UC Davis Medical Center. One man died at the hospital and the other remains in critical condition, according to Harvey. The name of the man who died is being withheld pending formal identification by the Sacramento County coroner.

Firefighters were able to put out the flames almost immediately, but the car was totaled, Harvey said.
