The California Highway Patrol said that a driver was northbound on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard about 5:30 p.m. when Alfred Smith, 64, of Sacramento was crossing the street westbound at 48th Avenue.
The driver did not see Smith in his motorized wheelchair until he was so close that he could not avoid a collision, according to the CHP. Smith suffered major injuries and was transported to the hospital.
