A man convicted in the 2013 shooting death of his neighbor at a Del Paso Heights apartment building has been sentenced to 40 years to life in prison.

Avery Draughty, 32, was found guilty of second-degree murder in the death of 31-year-old Tiffany Silva. He was sentenced March 16 by Sacramento Superior Court Judge Maryanne Gilliard, according to a Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office news release.

Draughty and his girlfriend got into an argument with their upstairs neighbors in the 3700 block of Balsam Street on Nov. 28, 2013. The neighbors, Silva and Devlon Pittman, went back to their apartment. Draughty then got a gun from his apartment, went upstairs and fired one time, killing Silva, authorities said.

Draughty fled and remained on the run for nearly 17 months. He was arrested by Rancho Cordova police in March 2015.

When Draughty was found, authorities said, he had changed his appearance, obtained fake identification cards and lied to police about his identity.
