The man hit and killed by a big rig after first colliding with another big truck on Interstate 5 was a resident of Rancho Murieta.

Dale Stewart, 65, had been in a crash with a big rig on northbound I-5 south of Hood-Franklin Road around 1 a.m. Wednesday. However, instead of heading for the side of the road, he started walking northbound on I-5. Stewart was identified by the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office on Thursday.

A California Highway Patrol officer was dispatched and arrived at the scene. Stewart, who the CHP said may have been confused, had already walked away.

After clearing the vehicle from the highway lane, the officer went in search of the driver, according to the CHP. It was then that the officer was told by dispatchers that a pedestrian had been struck in a traffic lane north of the initial crash.

Stewart was hit and killed by a northbound tractor-trailer.
