The Sacramento Fire Department reports that a body was recovered Friday afternoon from the American River in the area of the Howe Avenue boat ramp.
The Fire Department responded shortly before 3 p.m. after a park ranger reported a possible drowning victim in the water about a quarter mile upriver from the Howe Avenue ramp.
Fire Department spokesman Chris Harvey said a boater spotted what appeared to be a body and took a picture with a cellphone. The boater showed the photo to a park ranger, who summoned the Fire Department.
Harvey said a Fire Department boat crew confirmed that there was a body caught in snags about 10 feet under water. He said it appeared the body had been in the water for some time. No information was available regarding the age or gender of the victim.

Members of the Drowning Accident Rescue Team recovered the body about 4:30 p.m. Harvey said divers had to contend with a very swift current, as well as the difficulty of dislodging the body from snags.
The body was turned over to the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office.
