An Elk Grove Walmart employee collecting shopping carts in the store parking lot was attacked Thursday evening by a man wielding a hammer.

The incident occurred about 7 p.m. in the 8400 block of Elk Grove Boulevard. Officer Christopher Trim, Elk Grove police spokesman, said a store employee in his 20s was going through the parking lot gathering shopping carts when he was approached by a man who engaged him in a brief conversation. After the conversation, the man pulled out a hammer and struck the employee in the head.

Trim said the victim was not acquainted with the assailant, who fled before police arrived. The employee suffered a visible injury over his left eye and was taken to an area hospital for treatment.

The assailant, who has not been found, was described as Latino, about 5 feet 1 inch tall, weighing 150 pounds and wearing a gray tank top, shorts and tennis shoes.
