A foul odor led to the discovery of a man’s body decomposing under leaves and debris in Nevada County.
The death of the man found on property in the 16000 block of Countrywood Lane northeast of Nevada City is being treated as a homicide, according to Nevada County Sheriff Keith Royal.
People who live on the property had recently returned from a trip to Las Vegas when they noticed a strong odor. They initially thought the smell was coming from a dead bear or deer, but on Monday they decided to investigate.
“They found a body covered by debris and leaves,” Royal said. “That is when they notified us.”

The body did not appear to be buried, Royal said. It appears that the man had been dead for several days based on the advanced state of decomposition, according to a Sheriff’s Office news release.
The sheriff said there were indications of foul play, although he declined to give specifics. Crime scene investigators from the state Department of Justice were called.
