A body found decomposing under leaves and debris in Nevada County has been identified thanks to several distinguishable tattoos as that of 51-year-old Donald Mark Ormsby.

Ormsby’s body was found on property in the 16000 block of Countrywood Lane northeast of Nevada City. The death of Ormsby, a Grass Valley resident, is being treated as a homicide, according to Nevada County Sheriff Keith Royal.

Detectives expect to conduct further interviews and plan to seek more search warrants.

Ormsby’s body was discovered after people who live on the property noticed a strong odor after returning from Las Vegas. They initially thought the smell was that of a dead animal. Monday, they decided to investigate and found Ormsby’s body under debris and leaves, Royal said.

The body was not buried and Ormsby appears to have been been dead for several days based on the advanced state of decomposition, according to a Sheriff's Office news release.

The sheriff said there were indications of foul play, although he declined to give specifics.
