Demario Caperello, 19, and Samuel Marez, 24, were arrested about 3:30 a.m. on Sixth Street near Southside Park on suspicion of possessing illegal fireworks and conspiracy, according to a Police Department news release.

When officers found a social media site the men were using to sell fireworks, they asked the sellers to meet police near the 2100 block of Sixth Street. The suspects agreed and were detained for an investigation. During the preliminary investigation, officers confirmed they were attempting to sell illegal fireworks, the release said.

Police searched Marez’s residence, where they found 100 pounds of illegal packaged fireworks. Marez was also charged for violating a previous probation.

Daniel Berlant, Cal Fire spokesman, urges people using safe and sane fireworks to be extra careful because of extremely dry conditions caused by drought.
