A south Sacramento couple have been sentenced to 25 years to life in prison for the 2014 death of their 3-month-old son.

Terry Scott, 21, and Ashleigh Smith, 29, were convicted in May of second-degree murder and assault causing death. The were sentenced Friday by Sacramento Superior Court Judge Kevin McCormick.

On July 24, 2014, the Sacramento Fire Department responded to a call for aid in the 2900 block of North Meadows Drive in south Sacramento. They found Scott and Smith’s son, Tyrese, in critical condition and took him to an area hospital. He was subsequently transferred to the UC Davis Medical Center, where he died two days later.

Prosecutors said Scott and Smith had chronically abused the child since his birth on April 26, 2014. They said the infant had multiple brain traumas, 10 broken ribs in different stages of healing, eyeball hemorrhages and a hemorrhaged testicle.
