Police say a man who broke into a neighbor’s house early Wednesday in West Sacramento fired at the homeowners before using the weapon to kill himself.

Officers were dispatched at 4:20 a.m. for a burglary in progress at a home in the 2500 block of Jacquelyn Lane in the Southport neighborhood of the city. A caller said that shots had been fired.

When officers arrived, they found a dead man in the house’s entryway. Two people inside the home were not injured.

An investigation revealed that the man who died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound was the 59-year-old neighbor of the residents whose house was broken into.

“He broke into the house and shot at the homeowners,” said police Sgt. Roger Kinney. “They were not struck. He then turned the gun on himself and he died as the result of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.”
