Police are investigating possible crimes in the area around 19th and H Streets in midtown Sacramento committed by a suspect who later died in custody.
Just after midnight Wednesday, officers were alerted to a man acting suspiciously, peering into and possibly tampering with vehicles in the vicinity of 19th and H streets, according to police. When the officers made contact with the suspect, there was a short struggle and the suspect was taken to the main jail. Shortly after his arrival, he became unresponsive and was transported to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
CPR was administered at the jail. Police spokesman Officer Justin Brown said the man had some sort of medical emergency, but the cause of death will be determined by the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office.
The area around 19th and H streets was closed Wednesday morning until about 7:20 a.m. while investigators gathered evidence.
