A gunman was found in a neighbor’s yard near a Del Paso Heights home where he was suspected to have fled after shooting another man Monday night.

Officers were brought to the house in the 3500 block of Altos Avenue about 9 p.m. Monday, when a man on a bicycle was shot by another man in the 400 block of Leitch Avenue.

The two men knew each other, according to a police spokesman.

After officers interviewed the injured man, who suffered a minor leg wound, they traveled to the home on Altos Avenue where relatives of the suspected shooter lived. Several people exited the home and informed officers that the suspect was still inside.

Through the night, police negotiators tried to talk the man out and SWAT was called in. However, they got no response.

Tear gas was fired into the home in an effort to get the man to leave the home. Still, nobody had exited the house at daybreak. Eventually, police determined nobody was inside about 6:30 a.m.

Then, about 7:15 a.m. Tuesday, the wanted man was found hiding in a neighbor’s yard and taken into custody.

Police said late Tuesday afternoon that the man’s name was being withheld pending further investigation.
