Two males “joyriding” along railroad tracks just south of Elk Grove saw their sport-utility vehicle smashed by a freight train and dragged about 100 feet before bursting into flames, according to officials.
Kris Hubbard, battalion chief with the Cosumnes Community Services District Fire Department, said the incident happened Saturday morning at Eschinger Road and Highway 99.
Hubbard said the SUV driver was driving along the track bed shortly before 8 a.m. and attempted to “go up and over the tracks” when his vehicle became stuck on the rails. He said the SUV occupants could not move the truck off the tracks, then got out of the vehicle and tried to signal an approaching freight train to stop.
Those efforts were unsuccessful, as the train crashed into the vehicle. Hubbard said the train was moving at a relatively slow speed, and it was “not a real hard impact.”
