Healthy Kids Day braces for larger crowds

A “Get Ready to Enroll” workshop will be among the highlights Saturday of Healthy Kids Day at Sleep Train Arena, where primary care and insurance services will be presented in a festive, family-friendly format.

Sacramento Covered, a non-profit which aims to improve access to affordable health care throughout the capital region, will host the event in preparation for Covered California’s upcoming open enrollment period in November.

This is the 14th year for Healthy Kids Day, which expects to serve 2,000 Sacramento County residents during the Saturday-only event. Organizers moved it to Sleep Train Arena for the first time this year to accomodate what they expect to be larger crowds.

From 9 a.m. until 2 p.m., area residents and their families can access free flu shots for all ages, free dental and vision screenings for chlidren and information about nutrition, literacy and immigration programs. The Kings Dancers and Slamson the lion will perform at noon, both for the first time at this event.

During the enrollment workshop, counselors will provide application assistance for Medi-Cal, Covered California health plans, and other programs including CalFresh and the federal supplemental nutrition program for women, infants and chlidren (WIC). Free healthy lunches and snacks will be available.

Saturday’s event is sponsored by Dignity Health, Kaiser Permanente, Sutter Health, UC Davis Children’s Hospital and the Sacramento Kings.

At last year’s event, 500 flu immunizations were administered and nearly 700 attendees filled out enrollment forms.

“Often individuals and families don’t know that they are eligible for coverage and can get the health care they need,” said Kelly Bennett-Wofford, executive director of Sacramento Covered, in a press release. “Healthy Kids Day is one way that we bring together health resources in a one-stop shopping experience. It’s a win-win.”
