Funds sought for rainbow-colored crosswalks in Sacramento’s Lavender Heights
A fundraising effort has started to install rainbow-colored crosswalks at the main intersection of Sacramento’s Lavender Heights neighborhood, the city’s hub of gay pride and culture.
The Rainbow Chamber of Commerce and other LGBT organizations have started to raise the $30,000 needed to place the rainbow crosswalks at the intersection of 20th and K streets, said Councilman Steve Hansen, who represents the area.
The crosswalks would be installed using multicolored asphalt scored into the street. Similar crosswalks have been installed in San Francisco’s Castro District and in Los Angeles, Boston, New York and Vancouver.
The Midtown Business Association endorsed the idea this week and said it would help with the plan, according to Emily Baime Michaels, the organization’s executive director.
“This is a way to draw attention to this community, show how strong it is and recognize its history,” Hansen said.
Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender organizations are also advocating for an official recognition for Lavender Heights.
