Construction has begun on an 8,000-seat soccer stadium at Cal Expo that will house Sacramento Republic FC, the city’s new professional soccer franchise.
Crews are tearing out concrete and grass at the site of the stadium, which will stand adjacent to the Raging Waters park inside the state fairgrounds. The stadium will cost $3 million and is being funded by Ovations Fanfare – the company that provides concession service at Cal Expo – and Republic FC.
Construction is expected to last two to three months. Republic FC will play its first three home matches at Hughes Stadium on the Sacramento City College campus.
The team announced today it has received deposits on nearly 4,800 season tickets. Team officials have stated a goal of getting promoted to Major League Soccer in 2016 and have said fan support will be crucial to that goal.
