Several lane closures on westbound Interstate 80 in the north Sacramento area will cause more than 30-minute delays over the next two weekends.

The closures, scheduled to start at 10 p.m. Friday and continue until 5 a.m. Monday, are part of the $133 million “Across the Top” project scheduled to be completed this fall, according to the state Department of Transportation. The project will add about 10 miles of carpool lanes in both directions, repave the highway from east of the Sacramento River Bridge to Watt Avenue and add about 1 mile of new auxiliary lanes from West El Camino Avenue to the I-80 and Interstate 5 interchange.

CHECK CURRENT TRAFFIC CONDITIONS

During this weekend’s work, westbound I-80 will be reduced to two lanes from Longview Drive to Winters Street in north Sacramento for demolition and pavement construction work, according to Caltrans.

The Longview Drive onramp to westbound I-80 and the Winters Street offramp from westbound I-80 will also be closed. Drivers will be redirected to follow eastbound I-80 to Watt Avenue to turn around.

Additionally, Caltrans will close the entrance to the right “local lane” east of Longview Drive, which will leave only two express lanes open. Drivers will have no access to freeway exits at Winters Street, Raley Boulevard, Norwood Avenue and Northgate Boulevard.

Drivers can take the westbound I-80 express lanes, exit at Truxel Road and get back onto eastbound I-80 to access these streets.

From Aug. 26 to Aug. 29, construction crews will shut down the No. 2 and No. 3 lanes to westbound I-80 west of Truxel Road. The lanes will be redirected to Interstate 5.

The far left lane will be the only lane open for westbound I-80 to San Francisco. There will be no access to West El Camino Avenue from westbound I-80. The northbound and southbound I-5 connector ramps to westbound I-80 will be closed and the northbound Truxel road onramp to westbound I-80 will also be closed.

To reach West El Camino Avenue from I-5, drivers can use westbound Arena Boulevard and head south on El Centro Road to West El Camino Avenue. Drivers can also take the far right lanes of southbound I-5 and connect to westbound Highway 50 to the I-80 junction toward Davis.
