A man shot three members of his family, killing two of them, before turning the gun on himself on New Year’s Day in east Modesto, authorities said.
The incident happened around 9 p.m. in the 2000 block of Sharilyn Dr., which is part of a residential neighborhood to the south of Floyd Avenue and west of Oakdale Road.
Police responded to the home after a man called 911, saying he had killed his family.
Early Friday, police confirmed they believe the incident is a murder-suicide involving a couple and their adult children. Two men and a woman have been killed, with a second woman taken to the hospital in critical condition.

Investigators believe the father, a man in his mid to upper 50s, was the shooter, Sgt. Mark Weiglein said Friday. The man’s wife and son were killed, and his 34-year-old daughter was taken to the hospital. The four were alone in the house at the time of the incident.
Police said they have not established a motive, and are not releasing any names pending the ongoing investigation. Weiglein said the son also was believed to be in his 30s, and that all four apparently lived in the home.
“Neighbors didn’t have any indication anything was wrong,” Weiglein said.
