GOP gubernatorial hopeful Donnelly saves life on video

Tim Donnelly dislodged a piece of bread from a choking woman’s throat recently.

It was fortunate for her that he did – “He saved my life,” the woman said. For Donnelly, perhaps, it was fortunate that his videographer was nearby.

The GOP candidate for governor posted video on YouTube last week. The headline: “Assemblyman Donnelly to the rescue!”

Donnelly, of Twin Peaks, is shown performing the Heimlich maneuver on Adrienna Schabert, a supporter, at a meeting of Republican women in Ontario.

Schabert, 50, of West Sacramento, said Donnelly was posing for photographs when she choked on a piece of her dinner roll. “I couldn’t get it out,” she said. “I couldn’t do anything, so I stood up. ... He turned around and just went and did it.”

Donnelly, who is wearing a cowboy hat, says, “I’m sorry if I did it too hard,” and adds, “My wife is always telling me to cut it into really tiny pieces and I never listen.”

Dan Newman, a political spokesman for Gov. Jerry Brown, gave credit where it was due on Twitter, offering Donnelly “sincere props ... for knowing and using Heimlich maneuver to help choking woman.”

ON THE AGENDA

So NBA great Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, renowned actress Geena Davis and state Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson walk into a convention center. There is no punchline here, actually, unless you find science and math education hilarious. The above mentioned will join an estimated 2,000 teachers for a two-day conference on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics education – commonly known as STEM – at the Sacramento Convention Center today.

– Jeremy B. White

WORTH REPEATING

“He was someone that opened the door for us to realize that (teaching and art advocacy is) a possible life.”

Malaika Zweig Latty, in the Los Angeles Times, paying tribute to her former teacher, Joseph Gatto. Father of Assemblyman Mike Gatto, D-Los Angeles, Joseph Gatto was murdered slain last week.
