Actor Richard Dreyfuss, center, makes a point with Sen. Mark Leno, D-San Francisco, during his visit Thursday to the Senate.
The Senate honored Dreyfuss, 66, for his efforts to improve civics education in the United States and to get more young people involved in public life.
“It wasn’t that long ago that there were people who referred to politicians and politics as a noble calling,” Dreyfuss told senators. “It hasn’t been lately, and I’d love to get it back there as soon as possible.”
The nonprofit Dreyfuss Initiative provides teachers with educational tools.
