Rep. Tom McClintock is focused on his re-election bid against a fellow Republican this fall but also is keeping an eye on his party’s would-be candidates for the White House in 2016.
He likes what he sees. McClintock, a rock-ribbed conservative who has spent decades in politics, said in an interview Wednesday that he can’t recall an upcoming presidential race with so many talented possible contenders on the Republican side.
“I don’t remember in my lifetime ever having as good a range of choices as is developing right now,” McClintock said. “I am kind of like a kid in a candy store.
“Rand Paul appeals to me in many ways. Paul Ryan appeals to me in many ways. Scott Walker. The good news is we’ve got a very, very strong bench for 2016, which is something we’ve lacked in the past. Choosing among them will be very difficult.”
As for the Democrats? “I believe that they have failed and they have failed miserably,” he said.
“Everybody says, ‘Oh, McClintock, he’s such an ideologue.’ No, I believe in policies that work. I don’t believe in policies that don’t work ...
“The mystery to me is that we continue to follow policies that we know don’t work.”
