When this heavily Democratic state votes on Tuesday, rural stretches of California will have little to look forward to.

Democrats are polling ahead in every race for statewide office, and in Modoc County, the state’s most Republican – resignation has set in.

“We don’t get to choose where our ancestors settle,” said John Flournoy, a cattle rancher there.
